On a day when Mount Mercy Academy was honoring its past, it was the present that took center stage.

Taylor Jahn scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as Mount Mercy raced out to an 18-8 lead and never looked back in a 49-42 over Holland, at Mount Mercy Academy Saturday morning.

It was Jahn that got the Magic going early as she scored the first eight points of the contest, with Mercy jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. With Holland playing zone, Jahn was able to hit her first three of the game, before once again contacting a quick catch and shoot three-pointer from the left side.

With Holland only trailing 15-8, Jahn was left open in the left corner and drained her third three of the game to give the Magic a 10 point lead after one. From there, it was the Magic defense that took center stage.

Senior Taylor Jahn scored a game-high 19 points.

Both teams had trouble scoring in the second quarter, with the Magic holding Holland to just two points. Mercy weren’t any better scoring just six points in the second to take a 24-10 lead heading into the break.

The third quarter was all Magic as Jahn was on fire again beyond the arch, hitting two more three’s - and the inside game of senior Alexis Dintino and junior Claire Przybyszewski started to take over.

Both played a key role keeping the Holland bigs in check. Dintino chipped in nine points and played tough defense all game. Przybyszewski also chipped in with eight points, and grabbed some key rebounds, especially late in the game.

With Mercy up by 21 (39-18) heading into the fourth quarter, the game seemed all but out of reached. However, Holland went on a run, and even cut the lead to nine before senior Bella Scarcello took over.

Senior Bella Scarcello scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter.

Scarcello scored all nine of her points, including two key three’s, in the final quarter as Mercy had to hang on for the victory.

After the game, Mount Mercy held its 11th annual alumni game. Stars from the past were able to reconnect and play a pretty good brand of basketball.
